42nd Street Bagel Cafe in Claremont feels like the neighborhood spot where bagel lovers and breakfast seekers come to satisfy straightforward cravings with a bit of local flair. Situated on N Yale Avenue, this cafe draws a mix of early risers grabbing a quick coffee and bagel, weekend brunch crowds who don’t mind a brief wait for a table, and folks who enjoy lingering on the patio with their morning brew.

It’s clear the bagels are the heart of the experience here — toasted to order with a fresh, chewy bite that recalls classic New York styles but with some inventive variations, like their jalapeño and cheese bagels that appear regularly on sandwiches and melts. The menu features a wide range of options, from traditional cream cheese spreads and lox to more unexpected choices including a vegetarian garden patty melt on a spicy jalapeño cheese bagel and seafood offerings like clam in spicy broth or squid in black ink, showing the kitchen’s comfort with flavors beyond the typical bagel shop fare.

The atmosphere inside tends to be cozy and relaxed, with dim lighting and thoughtfully chosen music creating a laid-back vibe in the afternoons, while mornings see a livelier buzz as patrons pick up coffee and breakfast to start their day. The outdoor patio adds a casual, airy option for those who want to enjoy Claremont’s sunny weather, and the staff strike a balance between efficient takeout service and warm, helpful hospitality, often guiding indecisive visitors through the menu.

42nd Street seems best suited for anyone who appreciates a solid, well-made bagel with quality toppings, whether you’re stopping by for a quick solo coffee and bagel or meeting friends for a relaxed breakfast. Weekday mornings and early afternoons offer a quieter atmosphere, while weekends can get busy as Claremont’s locals and visitors converge for brunch. Coffee here stands up well alongside the food, with options like espresso and cappuccino that pair nicely with sweeter or savory bagel combos.

For those who like to try a bagel that’s both classic and a little adventurous, the jalapeño cheese bagel — either alone or with fillings like tuna melt or whitefish — consistently comes up as a local favorite. Add a fruit spritzer or flan for a more complete experience that goes beyond standard bagel shop fare. In all, 42nd Street Bagel Cafe offers a neighborhood-friendly setting that feels easygoing but thoughtfully put together, appealing especially to people who see breakfast as a journey rather than just a meal.

I’m a big fan of bagels, so maybe I’m a little biased but the bagels here are seriously good! I tried the jalapeño cheese bagel with lox, and it was absolutely delicious. My husband got the same, but with onions added, and he loved it too. The shop was clean, the staff was friendly, and the overall vibe was welcoming. I’d definitely come back next time I’m in the area!

Claremont is a very popular place on the weekends and it is difficult to get a table at most of the restaurants for breakfast/brunch. So, I decided to try this little take-out place. They have a decent patio and excellent coffee. I had their breakfast scramble bowl and a cinnamon-raison bagel with butter. Everything was delicious and only $13 with tax for my breakfast including coffee. I sat on the patio and enjoyed the lively view of people out and about on a Sunday morning.

Omg. If you want to have a really good home baked bagel you have to go here. One of the best bagels I ever had. Nice outdoor patio and great staff. I usually don't give a five unless a place deserves a five star review. This is a five.

I came in on a Wednesday afternoon and I absolutely loved the vibe. It was dimly lit, good music playing and I received outstanding service from Amani. She’s so warm, kind and helpful. I couldn’t decide what I wanted because everything sounds so good. On her advice, I ordered and everything bagel club and added red onions and ooooooo mmmmmmm it was sooo good. Fresh, aesthetically pleasing and also just great flavor. Also, the bagel chips are so, so good. I plan to use them for hummus and lebni dip. Fragrant, nice crisp, and delicious. I highly recommend. The Chinese chicken salad is simple and what I love about it is the generous amount of dressing. Will come back for a light lunch any day. Kudos to great food, service and atmosphere.

Favorite bagel place, after going to New York and trying their bagels this is one of my favorite places to go and it is local to me. I always go for the BLT bagel and I like to add cream cheese can’t go wrong. Service is always fast the staff is always friendly. Love it

Delightful experience here! Atmosphere of the place was a nice surprise. Then the bagels arrived, and they were amazing. I ordered the Lox... It was devoured immediately. My S/O got the everything bagel. Also very delicious. I don't recall bagels getting me this enthusiastic. Really looking forward to return.
